Best Section Hike

Ok, I’m looking for the best 100 mile section of the AT or a good two week trip. Any suggestions would be great. I was thinking maybe VT or NH? maybe VA? Let me know your thoughts. Thanks.

I think it depends on what your looking for. Are you looking for a pure wilderness experience, a trail and town experience or something in between. The Mt. Rodgers area in Virgina is really nice as is the 100 mile wilderness, and the Whites. I’m not sure how section hikers handle the hut sytem in the Whites though. Do they stealth camp like thru hikers or do they pay the hut fees?

It also might dpeend on what kind of shape you are in. I had no problem hiking the Whites or the 100 mile wilderness but that was after 3 months on the trail.

It depends a lot on your timeframe…

What month do you plan to hike?

A great section would be from Monson to Katahdin - the “100 mile wilderness” but I would never want to be up there in June or July b/c of the bugs…

I think the ‘wildest’ section of the A.T. is the Mahoosucs in Southern Maine, but its also probably the most brutal up & down especially when its wet. The Presidentials in the Whites and the Mahoosucs could be combined for an awesome, but very tough, physical hike.

A great section in the South other than the Grayson Highlands area in VA that Jalan mentioned above is from Erwin, TN to Damascus, VA over the Roan Highlands - great terrain over high southern balds. Or… The Smokies when they are not so crowded (ie not during peak summer or Holidays).

If your set on VT/NH, & you don’t want the brutality of the Whites, the 104 miles from the MA border to Sherburne Pass along the Long Trail in VT is fun.

Happy Trails!

I looked into the 100 miles along the Long Trail/AT. It looks nice and I’m leaning that way right now. I’ve done the Presidentials but I could see myself going back. I enjoyed that area alot.

As for the Grayson Highlands, I’ve been dreaming of them ever since I read Stumpknocker’s journal a few years ago. I would love to go there and I just might. I’m in CT so it would be nice to do some miles outside of New England.

Dennis Road Cove near Watuaga Lake towards Atkins, va is pretty nice. It covers the Mt. Rogers region.

My friend wants to visit me from Texas while my daugher in law and I thru hike. She wants to come to the best place as far as beauty, easy hiking, and interesting. She is not a real out doors kind of person. I am starting at Springer on April 16th and she can come an visit in June or July. I read something about wild horses but I do not know if that is easy hiking around there. Any suggestions?
