Yogi have written several journals and they are all first rate. Go to her 1999 AT journal, read the first post, and I bet you will want to read more.

I haven’t kept up with many recent journals, but

I still think Ramkitten '00 is first rate.
Belcher, also from '00, is just as awesome.

You can learn a lot from Hyrdo Heidi’s Journal, well written, and she evaluates Gear, and really give you a clear prospective on what you can expect, and what you might want to do different.

I guess because I haven’t kept up with current solo female journals (cept for those I hiked with earlier this year) that makes me clueless.

Let’s take it to the root.

Totally solo? Like, no trail families, visiting boyfriends/husbands/children, little or no trail magic?

That kind of solo female thru-hiker?

Well, that would be none other than Grandma Gatewood.

Unfortunately she never kept a journal (at least, nothing that got published - like Walking With Spring, or Campfires Along the Appalachian Trail). So, Marsha-Marsha-Marsha, you’ll never be able to prove me clueless one way or the other on that one

Cheers to the original:cheers :cheers :cheers (I hope that’s espresso they’re clinking…)

Hey - just kiddin! No one ever ends up hiking alone. I bet even Grandma Gatewood had a few encounters-mostly with critters I’m sure! Have fun!!! :tongue

Jan Liteshoe and Hammock Hanger - type both their names in the search engine of Trailjournals and their journals will come up.

Just havin fun, too . . . but I really do wish Grandma Gatewood had made a journal of some sort. The most I’ve ever seen written about her is in the Rodale 2 volume book and it was only a few pages.

Another great solo female hiker from the AT’s early days is Dorothy Laker. She did the AT twice all the way, and the thrid time ended around the Whites (it was like the middle of October). She’s in the Rodale 2 Volume set Hiking the Appalachian Trail. Check it out!

Break-a-leg didn’t solo, but she has a great journal this year.

For historic thru hikes by women, I’d love to have more of an account of Peace Pilgrim’s hike - she was one of the rist women to thru-hike the trail (I read the first woman “to traverse on foot alone the entire 2,050 mile Appalachian Trail in one season of less than 5 months”).

See to traverse on foot alone the entire 2,050 mile Appalachian Trail in one season of less than 5 months. See http://www.peacepilgrim.org/ap_trail.htm

I can’t figure out what you just typed.

Plus the link didn’t work for me.

Make sure you spelled everything correctlee

I think the best female journal is Jan Liteshoe’s and the best male journal is Big Red’s. There are plenty of others, but these two inspired me.
