Best stargazing spots on the PCT

I only had a few days of steady rain this year while hiking. 95% of the time the sky was cloudless and I still had only a handful of awesome star nights. My best night was while camping near the watertank on Rodriges Spur Rd. in SoCal. Close 2nd was while night hiking near Thousand Island Lake in the Sierras. Where did everyone else find good stargazing spots?

Check out Pie Town, New Mexico! It’s supposed to be one of the “darkest” spots in the U.S., and therefore one of the best spots for viewing stars. Check out my TJ entry for the Continental Divide Trail dated December 2nd. I got invited to a “Star Party”!

while camped just above upper palisade lake while on the JMT in 2005, my buddy grizzly adam was able to get this star trai shot.

My best stargazing was from the Sierra Buttes Fire Lookout near Sierra City, CA. I slept on the upper catwalk on the cliff side of the tower - a bit breezy, but spectacular!

Upper Kern region, just south of Tyndall Creek - the small lake on the west side of the PCT on Bighorn Plateau (arguably the most scenic part of the PCT). The top of the small hill SW of the lake - 360 degree view of Sierra Crest, Kings-Kern Divide and the Great Westen Divide. A couple good wind sheltered campsites on top, but you have to carry water up the hill.
