Best time to do Mahoosuc Notch

I’m planning to take a 4-5 day section hike around the Mahoosuc Notch area at the end of the summer. I’ve never hiked the trail in Maine before and I’d like some input on the best time to go. I’m planning either the week right before or after labor day. I’d like to avoid crowds and bugs, cool temps. are no problem. Should I try to wait till later to avoid bugs/crowds? Thru-hikers and section hikers are no problem, I just want to avoid foolish weekend warriors and scouts. Is late August/early September to early in the year to avoid bugs? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
P.S. I’m already planning on going midweek

Late august. Better Sept for crowds and bugs even more.

If you go to the Mahoosuc area during mid week you should not have too much of a problem with crowds. The hiking is so tough and so views limited that it keeps most of the weekend warriors and scouts out. It is however one of the most beautiful areas of the Whites. Damn, now you got me thinking I should go there this summer.

Big B-Limited views in the Mahoosucs?? Maybe we hiked different trails or something. Views from Goose Eye, Carlo Mtn, Old Speck, Mahoosuc Arm and the Baldplates were some of the best on the AT.

A-Train, around the Mahoosuc Notch area the views are nothing compared to the Presidentials and Franconia range where the views are spectacular and continuous. Most weekenders and dayhikers go there. There are many fine views in the Mahoosucs but the energy it takes to get to them discourages lots of hikers IMHO. I do love the area for its ruggedness and wilderness feel though.

What do you have in mind, up and back from Grafton Notch? Sweet. Think early September, no day hikers, no bugs.

Views? The Pressies are nice if you want views of turons, huts, parking lots, summit buildings, trains, highways, ski lifts, mill chimneys…
