Hi There,

I’m planning a trip to the North Cascades in September. Can anyone recommend a small quiet town that can serve as a hub for some day hikes in the area. A few hikes that I may be interested in are Skyline Divide, Cascade/Sahale and a few others in both of these general areas. Me and my wife are winging it as far as accomodations so we can split our trip up if needed. any opinions on favorite hikes are much appreciated as well.
Thanks in advance

For the Skyline Divide, the town of Glacier, WA. For the Cascade Pass/Sahale area, probably the Marblemount or Concrete area. For hikes on the east side of the North Cascades Highway, Winthrop. If you look up the hikes on www.wta.org, the directions to the trailhead will mention the nearest town.

To avoid lots of driving back and forth, a single hub may not be what you want. For the Skyline Divide, which on the Mt. Baker Highway, somewhere near the town of Glacier, WA. For the Cascade Pass/Sahale area, probably the Marblemount or Concrete area. For hikes on the east side of the North Cascades Highway, Winthrop or possibly Stehekin (for which you’d drive to Chelan and take the Lady of the Lake). If you look up the hikes on www.wta.org, the directions to the trailhead will mention the nearest town.

Sorry about the multiple posts! I didn’t click “post” until the last revision, but all of them hit!

I just walked down WA 20 from Ross Lake to Sedro-Wooley late last summer because the Pacific Northwest Trail route was closed by fire west of Ross Lake. The best town for services was Concrete–laundry, grocery, library with internet, a couple of lodging options, decent diners, great pizza at Annies. I wasn’t in day hiking mode, so I don’t know about trails in the immediate area.
