									Hello,

I am searching for a safe passage to enjoy the Applachian Trail by way of Bicycling. I need to know of any spot along side of trail that you can do some bike-hike traveling.

Anyone with a place on the web to find such info plase drop me an Email at chefshawn427@hotmail.com

I will be starting my trip in MD just across the PA state line in Fort Richie. I am traveling to the End of the Trail in GA I hope to get to enjoy some Awesome traveling as I did on the Pacific Coastal Bike Route.

Thanks,

Bikes of any kind are not allowed any where on the AT. Read the rules and laws. It is for hikers to walk not bike. You want to bike an trail do the mountain to sea trail which is for bikes not on the at.

Shawn, I would suggest purchasing AT maps from the ATC, Appalachian Trail Conservancy. You can also buy some AT maps(with Guide books) at REI or local outfitters. The ATC has made a series of Maps of the entire AT. From Maine (Maryland) to Georgia. Of course the emphasis of the maps are on the AT, however on these maps you will be able to see side roads, secondary roads, forest service roads, and major highways that run close to or cross the AT. You can also visit Google Maps, and find AT Shelters on the AT. Zoom in along the trail and you will also see roads in which to bicycle. Bicycles themselves are not allowed on the AT.

I see that you rode the Pacific Coastal Bike Route. There is an Atlantic Coast Trail, but not along the AT. You could catch it around Norristown, PA and ride all the way to Key West, FL. I would also suggest the TransAmerica Trail that runs from Yorktown, VA to Astoria, OR. 4,000 miles in about 3 months of pedaling. These routes are already laid out, they have maps and places to stay. Visit Adventure Cycling Association for more details. Hope this helps.

you could look into cycling skyline dry and the blue ridge parkway. the AT parallels skyline drive through SNP and parts of the parkway parallels the AT south of SNP. other parts of the parkway parallel the NC Mtns to Sea trail. and you'd end up in Smoky Mtn NP, where there is AT too.

all together from Front Royal to SMNP is about 560 miles.

Bikes are also allowed on the C&O (Chesapeke & Ohio)rails to trails portion of the AT in MD outside Harpers Ferry. The two run together for at least a couple of miles, before the AT crosses the highway and climbs the mountain heading north.

									Shawn,

In the 1990s the Adventure Cycling Association developed the Great Divide Mountain bike route. A mountain bikers version of the CDT. I am presently working on a new trail following the AT called the Appalachain Mountain Bike Way. It will follow as close to the AT as possible utilizing forest service roads and back roads. Yes, mountain bikes are allowed on these roads. I have the southern Appalachains mapped but not researched beginning in Alabama. I will keep yoou posted of the route and I can email you some of the links to the maps if you like.

For those I have had discussions with in the past. I was going by the trail name FreeSpirit. That has recently changed to Wind Walker due to the encouragement of friends and family. Thought I would add this to clear up the different names on the last post.:cheers
