The very large West Fork fire is probably 50 miles south of the CT, however, a new smaller (but fast growing) fire (Papoose Fire) just exploded only a few miles south of the CT. SJ Ron

It looks as if both rtes 160 between South Fork and Pagosa and 149 between South Fork and Creede are closed due to fires. If you didn’t get through the Weminuche Wilderness it may be a while before you can. Three of us were planning to hike the San Juans in August so we shall see how that works out. After getting “caught” in the Gila fire in 2011 I have great respect for caution.

160 is closed in the Wolf Creek Pass area and 149 is closed between South Fork & Creede. The Papoose fire has been moving primarily east (not north) and is still 5+ miles from the CT (south of Jarosa Mesa in Segment 23). SJ Ron

So are the sections closed? I am starting my hike on the 8th of july, do you think that the sections 1 and 2 will be open by then ? what should I do about this. too much planning and effort has been put forward to reschedule.

If you are starting in a couple weeks, Segments 1 & 2 should be open by then. If not, you will have to begin at Segment 3. The fires in the San Juan’s are going to be much more difficult to project but you won’t be arriving there for at least a month so watch the CT Facebook Page and the forum boards. The San Juan fires are still growing and hot weather with no rain is forecast for the next week. SJ Ron

Here is the latest post on the CTF Facebook Page:

"BUMMER, WATERTON CANYON CLOSED AGAIN - Rapidly changing fire conditions this Monday June 24 3:30 Mountain Time. Another fire (new, still small) has started near Strontia Springs Reservoir, midway CT Segment 1. "

“BEST BET (AGAIN) IS TO START AT SEGMENT 3 LITTLE SCRAGGY TRAILHEAD. Though Segment 2 is open, Foxton Rd, County Rd 96/97, is still restricted to residents only, so you cannot currently drive to the east end of Segment 2.”
