Bikepacking AZT south of Tucson

Hi,

I just did a short bikepacking trip on the AZT, from Tucson to Patagonia.

Pictures and some words are over on bikepacking.net:

There are still a few miles of trail to be built, but this is already a great section for bikes. The Cienega Corridor stuff, in particular, is a pure pleasure to ride.

When do people typically start this trail if they are planning on doing the whole thing? Do they go N-S or S-N? What is the latest start date?

I assume you’re asking about thru-biking, not hiking.

Since cycling tends to be a little faster than hiking (if only because of the detours around wilderness areas), most start in April. Even then most seem to arrive on the north rim when there is still too much snow.

That would be for a S->N trip.

I also started in October and went S->N. But the traditional direction would be N->S in the fall, starting late Sept or any time in October.
