I met Scott four days ago between Cascade Locks and Timberline Lodge. He’s SoBo this year. Question…How can anyone so clean and clean-shaven be a long distance hiker?

Answer: He hikes so fast all the dirt and facial hair get blown right off of him!

…ahhhhh!..that was priceless!..(and probably true!) :>) …and yeah…scott is sooooo fast!..but y’ know, he “brakes for hikers”!..paw-ee and i had the opportunity in '09 to meet scott briefly at the cafe in seiad valley…what an incredibly friendly and helpful guy!..i remember thinking (as scott remained standing to get his order), “wow…this trail ‘celebrity’ who needs to make his miles still genuinely has time for li’l ol’us?”…scott was open and upbeat, and very generous with good advice and encouragement…we were so glad to have been able to spend a few minutes with him!..(and paw-ee, after observing scott as he “walked” out of town, got serious about practicing his scott williamson cadence! heh heh!)

Seeing Scott has become part of the PCT experience, like staying at Saufley’s, meeting Billygoat, etc. Your hike just isn’t complete without them.

We ran into Bink near Whites Pass. He spent 20 minutes talking with us in spite of the fact that he is pushing to improve his record or at least set a SB record. But the funniest part is his entry in the trail register at the border. He wrote about intending to go for the record but given the snow he encountered on the way to the border felt there was less than a 5% chance of success. I would love to know the reaction of Sam Fox when he read that. I think what changed from the Border to Whites Pass was the fact that he was on record pace when we met him in spite of the snow. Given the conditions that we saw I actually believe he has a shot at besting his record if:

  1. the blowdowns get cleared substantially by the time he hits the sections. Little chance in southern WA but hopefully further south.
  2. he doesn’t run into early Sierra snow.

I wish him well, he is certainly a first class guy.
