I just got a package from Amazon with Birdlegs’ new book in it, entitled “How to Hike the A.T.: The Nitty Gritty Details of a Long Distance Trek” , by Michelle Ray. She’s finally seeing her long time project in print. I’ll be checking it out and posting a review on my web site ASAP. Lots of her own illustrations that are also very cool. Great self portrait on page 109. She has a Trailjournal from 2007.

Uncle Tom, thanks for posting about this. I had wondered if she had followed through on writing the book and am glad to see that she did. Looking forward to reading it; she is a gifted writer.

Where is YOUR book?

Some people just have the negativity auto-reflex.
It’s simple: Just don’t buy it if it’s not your thing. Why tear down someone else’s offering, especially anonymously?

Your penance: Add something positive to the sum-total of life happiness today. Go ahead, dig deep, you can do it.

Hey, no book is more famous than the Bryson book and he didn’t even finish one thru-hike. I, for one, like to hear about all of them and then choose for myself. I’ve enjoyed journals from many one year hikers. Their enthusiasm is unchecked.

“As Far As the Eye Can See,” is a non-fictional account of one of the first 100 AT thru-hikers named, David Brill, who was just 22 when he accomplished his AT hike without miracle fabrics and trail magic. His book is still in print today. It is far superior to Bryson’s book of fiction. What is disappointing, though, is that when I attended the recent ALDHA Gathering, no one on the board had ever heard of the young hiker (now 52) or his book which, by the way, was published in the 1980’s by the ATC. These new accounts are great and the author is to be commended for the time commitment devoted to sharing one’s personal account. Everyone’s hike has meaning.
