I am going to hang out around the town of Bishop for a few days before heading off for the John Muir Trail. Does anyone have anything to say about the town? Are there any cool places to camp nearby?

my sister lives in bishop. i’ve never camped there, but there is lots of camping to be had in the area. mammoth of course is close by, june lake is a little farther north, i think. crowley lake… convict lake… it is so beautiful there!!! i’m jealous–enjoy the scenery!! and don’t miss schat’s bakery on the main drag in bishop–world-famous; the chili cheese bread is to die for.

Be sure to check out Galen Rowell’s photo studio/gallery in Bishop. I’ll be there in late August for sure. He was one of the finest landscape photographers of our time; it’s unfortunate he passed away so early.
