Black Bear at shelter

Hello Hikers, I was reading your trail journals and heard about the Bear taking food bags. I had a thought about an old commercial about a bear or tiger that could not get the smell of the steak from wrapping it in foil, Reynold wrap makes hot bags, they are very light weight and strong seems they would last a few or more food wraps, it’s just a thought…

True, but bears who get their food from shelters tend to pretty much open up anything they see. While they have a very good sense of smell, it’s not the only way they detect food. I doubt hiding just the smell of your food will keep them out.

Bear Bag Hanger

On the AT, I have noted that many bear bags are not hanging high enough or as far out from the tree trunk that is safe. They should be 10-12 feet high and 6 feet from the trunk of the tree to be safe from a black bear. higher to avoid grizzlies. I have seen a grizzlie just push the tree over to get to a source of food.
