Hi everyone!
I’m looking to plan a few hikes this summer with some friends. Any idea how early I can start hiking the 100 miles without being killed by the black flies? What about the Whites?
Thanks!

Hopefully some natives will pitch in, but on my hike last year, hitting the area in early July, I just hit the end of the black flies in the Whites and HMW. I had expected them to be gone by then, but it was a late spring and wet summer, so they were still there. So I guess it depends on the weather, like everything else.

In the Whites they usually start to die down after the end of June. If you are hiking or camping at altitude they are never too bad. As soon as the black flies are gone the mossies come out. If you hike in late April/ early May the black flies usually aren’t too bad.
