They’re biting in Vermont right now…
According to the old timer locals here, the season varies tremendously from year to year, but on average its from mid May to early July. Some summers they never really go away
As far as the range, i would guess from ME to northern PA. The larvae are born in running water - so black flies are normally found in higher concentrations near water.

We were in Caratunk, Pleasant Pond area last week, and yes, they were out, but not too bad, heard their season just started. They just keep you moving. Here in Connecticut along the Nipmuck Trail they are presently much worse for those of us traveling DEET free.

I was on the eastern half of the Grafton Loop Trail with my brother and nephew over Memorial Weekend…YES ! They are out…but mainly in the lower / wet elevations. At the mountain tops they weren’t a problem…guess they didn’t like the snow !
