I am in the south and going to New England the next two weeks. Plan to hike on the southern part of the LT and in Acadia in Maine. Is this a bad idea becuse of the Black flies. Whaiting untill the end of July or August is not an option. Are the blackflies in the Adirondecks also this time of year?

The Black Flies are just starting to come out in NH and should be very irritating until mid-July. If you camp high on open windy ridges they will not be there and also have trouble in the rain. They will bother the hell out of you anywhere there is no wind. They also seem to die down some at night. I don’t let them stop me from hiking but after 50 years of living in NH have learned to live with them.

This is probable the worst time of year for Black Flies in the Adirondacks, especially in the Southern parts. Also ditto for the L.T.I did volunteer Trail work on L.T.several years ago, about the 1st of June,I almost got eaten alive by the end of the day.Good Luck what ever you do.:cheers :boy

I was just in Acadia 2 days ago doing some mountain biking, and the black flies weren’t too bad. They’re typically not as bad on the coast anyway as there is usually a breeze coming off the water.

Inland they’re murder though, the worst I’ve seen in a long time.

Memorial Day Weekend is usually the time when black fly season in the Adirondakcs really gets going, so, yeah, there are black flies there. Will be thru June and into July, typically.

In Acadia National Park at the carriage road level, the black flies do exist. But once above the tree line the black flies are minimal. Mount Dessert Island at elevation is all exposed rock with little or no bog areas to support a large black fly population. Don’t worry about the bugs – just take a few precautions and get out there hiking.
