Bono... - Appalachian Trail

Anyone ever know what happened to Bono??? It is hard when a journalist doesn’t wrap up their journal. It leaves the reader wondering. I see that his pick comes up on the journal homepage a lot, it always makes me want to know what happened… Sue/HH

Bono is around. He posted to this forum a few weeks ago to say he will be at Trail Days in May. He had an email link on his posting if you want to go find it.

I recall someone asking him when he was going to finish his hike and he said he was done with that for now.

His journal was one of the most read journals I know of, over 200,000 views. Why? All the ladies seemed to love him. The beard perhaps?

He was/is/seems to be a very cool laid back dude. Maybe that sort of explains it.

Any trail journals read more than his? Can someone clue me in to why his journal was viewed so much.

See you out there. :cheers

Bono was widely read in 2003 because he started so early that, for a time, his was virtually the only journal available to be read. Also, he was hiking in winter weather, which tended to make the details somewhat more interesting than they might otherwise have been.

The Flying Scotsman then kicked in with his journal, shortly thereafter, and his journal was actually more readable and interesting, but he had time limits on his hike, so his journal terminated prematurely.

Then, as Bono’s hike sputtered out, with a few false starts here and there, people hung on, hoping for him; but, ultimately, we all had to acknowledge that he had burned out, lost focus, changed direction (perhaps impelled by a failed affair on the trail), and simply wasn’t going to finish.

He lost his heart; in more ways than one.

Sincerely–Conan.

Well I generally seem to think Bono got so many “hits” because all the ladies CAN’T resist him and hes got so many pics of his tremendous figure. I spent the night with him at ED Garvey shelter out of HF and he was a very nice guy. Down to earth, out there just to have a good time and enjoy himself.

My general theory about hits on journals (besides them not necessarily meaning a whole hell of a lot) is that the people that leave earliest in the years always get tons more hits than all other journals. Everyone is hungry for the Trail at the beginning of the year be it dreamers, folks planning to leave in a couple months or us sick thru-hikers who can’t get enough. With so much emphasis and attention put on the first couple hikers of the year, most readers generally get to know them pretty well and feel connected therefore following the rest of their trek. By time march/april comes around (especially the last year or two) there are simply too many journals to follow and a lot of folks I think stick to the couple they like, since its totally impossible to follow the current adventures of 100 or so people. I always picked a couple I like and followed those.

That being said, women, especially younger ones with lots of pictures tend to be the trophy winners with hits. Its no secret, check the numbers yourself.

While doing a section, last July, with Texas Jack we met Bono at the Mohican Outdoor Center. He was working in the kitchen. He had been working for about a month and said he was staying until they closec in Sept. Didn’t sound like he was too interested in finishing.

remeber each time you move from one day to the next its a hit. So if there are 50 days, thats 50 hits for one person assuming they read everyday.

In life the tall and the beautiful get the most money and the most dates, it makes sense that on the AT it would be the same.

I stopped reading Bono after he talked trash about the Hike INN
