I know this question is goig to be very different from person to person, but how fast do most people go thru books? I am trying to get a sense of how often I should I send them to myself . I don’t want to be throwing to many books away because I will not want to read them.( I guess I could also use them for kindling).

Buckwheat,
I’m an avid reader and so was thrilled at the idea of having six months to just read. Well, that quickly ended when I sent my first book home at Neal’s Gap. I think you’ll find that you don’t have much time to read. You’ll want to socialize during the evening, or will be too tired to focus on a book.
After sending my book home, I thought I would try something else and bought another book and tore it into sections, thinking I would read a chapter or two and then get the next part in my bounce box.
I didn’t do that either.
An idea would be to start with one in your bounce box and after the first week or so, see if you’ll really feel like reading one. I would definately recommend tearing it into pieces.
Also, leave the book in a shelter, don’t burn it! Weekenders might read, or if a thru-hiker has a zero day, a book is always welcome.

Just my two cents worth.

I read atleast a book a week and didnt get through 50 pages during the month i spent on the trail. Xena was 100% correct.

20 minutes before you go to bed works, but usually you’re too busy or tired. Still, you should bring a book, but I’d only recommend poetry or short stories.

Just pack a paperback and see how it goes. You can find used books at some little shops in towns too. I carried a really old book to read, but the stone was too heavy.:lol

A paperback doesn’t weigh a whole lot and reading is a great way to take your mind off trail miles, guidebooks, resupply, hunger etc… Reading by candlelight as the storm howled outside the lean-to was great entertainment. If you love the stuff King & Koonz put out all the better. The atmosphere is right, especially if you are alone and like to touch the dark side.
