Boots or Trail Runners

In the past I’ve always worn boots but of course I have never doen more then a week of hiking at once. My questions are for those with many long distance miles under their belt.

Which is more popular? Which is more comfortable? Of you thru hikers which did you encounter more often then the other? Positives and Negatives of both?

Trail runners are the only way to go.

I think for most people trail runners are the way to go but I still prefer light midhieght boots. I prefer to have more protection under my foot and some ankle support. When I day hike, unless the trail is really rocky and the hike is long, I use trail runners but with a pack on I always use boots.

Trail runners get wet faster but dry faster (even ‘water-proof’ hiking boots will get wet inside after days of rain or snow), weigh less, are more comfortable and less blister-forming, and less expensive. Light hikers might be good if you have a very heavy pack or bad ankles. Otherwise, I really wouldn’t consider boots for a long hike, even if they are comfortable for a few days. I went through 2 pairs of trail runners on my thru, and my partner only used one the whole time.

I’m with Big B. I like my light hikers. They are comfortable, have good ventilation, provide lots of support, and last much longer then most trail runners.

Its a shame to have to buy a new pair of shoes just when you’ve gotten the old ones feeling nice and comfortable.

I think trail runners are overrated.
