Bread / Pan Cakes

Is their anyway to cook bread / pan cakes on the trail with semi light weight device ?

A reflector oven looks very bulky and a fry pan to cook proper pan cakes is pretty heavy.

I was thinking of finding a lightweight but thick aluminum plate to use over stove or small wood fire.

I have done it by putting some pebbles and a little water min the bottom of my small pot and a much smaller pot with the cake mix inside of the big pot and covered the whole mess. You need a stove that you can control the heat with but it works. Not worth the effort IMHO.

For baking, I use an alcohol cat stove WITH the simmer ring. Then I put a sheet of metal (the bottom of a disposable pie pan)between my potstand and pot to divert the heat.

I make a cake out of instant pancake batter, and cakes out of cake mix, water, and chocolate chips. Only make enough for a 1.5-2 inch thick layer of batter, and the pancake mix will rise some too. It works, but you have to pay attention and take it off right when it smells even the least bit smoky.

Let it sit in the pot for a little bit to set up, then eat.

No extra devices for this method since I use the pie pan piece underneath my stove for normal cooking.

If you mix a packet of apple cider drink mix with the pancake mix (with water into a thick batter) then you get an apple cake.

I’ve used pebbles in the bottom of my pan and cut up Red Bull cans as muffin tins. Works great!

use pebbles in the bottom of the pot and then you can actually use muffin/cupcake cups to hold the batter. light weight and no mess. Check out freezerbagcooking.com for some great ideas on backcountry cooking.

Dr. Bob showed us at the ALDHA gathering that you can use parchment paper, 1/2 in. of water, fence wire cut to the shape of your pan, a simmer ring for an alcohal stove, one of those microwave desserts by Betty Crocker, thin tin for the top, cut to size and time. Place the wire and water in the pan, place the paper in next till it touches the water, pour in the cake mix, place the tin piece on, then the pan lid, light and boil then simmer, Dr.Bob’s stove burned 98 min with an oz of fuel. Should be baked when it goes out… this takes practice and you should do several at home first! Enjoy…Crawl
