Has anyone ever hiked any of the Buckeye Trail in Ohio? I believe it is the longest continuous trail contained in one state. I believe it is around 1300 miles long, although some of it is on roads and through big citys.

Just so happens we live right next to it! Its not a continuous trail but a whole bunch of section hikes. It can be done as a thru hike but some hard planing needs to be done since you can’t camp any where you feel. Check out this link. http://www.buckeyetrail.org/

bushwhack, i myself live in bellbrook ohio, a few miles form the trail, my family actually maintain a 5 mile section of it, i was just curious if anyone has ever thru hiked it, but i guess it would be difficult, and in my opinion isn’t nearly as pretty and secluded as the A.T., with all the roads, and big towns and such.

There is a couple/group that did last year. I was conversing with a member of the BTA , I think there were some pics on that link page.

Having seen a lot of it I get an idea that it is pieces of trail. From Xenia south is nice but muddy a hell since horses can use it. Its a med fest. Several places to camp. Down in the Wayne you get a lot more secluded. I want to do a section thru Ohio Power. All that grasses area looks cool. Ithey guy I talked to said there is a weak list of back yards you can ask to camp in buts they’re all private and may not be available. A good hand book would be nice. A lot of B+Bs (not us). the part thru Fairborn is pretty much useless. They just bulldozed a mile of it to put in condos…nice. Now its all roads there.

our section is actually quite nice, it runs along a river, and is fairly hilly, the only problem is hunters, it’s a dog training area, they seem to always be there, horses as u mentioned are also a problem, they sure do tear up the trails,

Sounds like Caesar Creek…or north of Gorham. You can’t even walk the trail from all the horses tearing it up. Feet deep with mud. Ish.
A fair amount of trash on your section then.

Hey clong! Me too - I live in Springfield where the Buckeye Trail runs mainly along a bikepath. Maybe this Trail will be one I can complete someday…hmmmm… Just wanted to mention that a couple of LD hikers just completed the whole BT this past week-end. They give a week by week account of their hike in their journal that is posted on an expanded link that BW gave earlier. Their account gives relatively current info on the trail conditions.

I’ve hiked the sections that go thru Tar Hollow and Scioto Trail…both Ohio state parks and both decent sections of the trail…the Tar Hollow section near Chillicothe is my favorite…it winds near a neat fire tower and even has an overnight hikers campground…not a lot of water sources but beautiful country…a great way to train for the AT…that’s the way I use it.
