How are the bugs in Georgia/Tennessee in late May early June. Looking to start at Springer Mountain and end up in Smokey Mountain NP.

I don’t think you will have a great deal of problems with bugs. Not sure where you are from, but the bugs in GA/TN are not like the flies or mosquitoes in the North. You do not need any special clothing or anything. There may be some bees, ‘Let the bees be and they will let you be.’

You should be fine…just mind where you camp, it that is what you are going to do. Avoid low gaps with water as they can be a favorite spot for mosquitos and no see ums. Bees can be annoying there to at some locations, if youre hanging clothes out to dry from the previous day it’s best to do it away from where you are immediately sleeping. The bees can be attracted to the salts in your clothes. I had that happen to me in GA in July when I awoke to, no kidding, a dreadful humming sound and no less than a 100 bees all over my hanging shirt just a few feet away from me.

I don’t know what kind of swarming bugs bothered me last April on the AT in GA/NC but they were annoying especially when I stopped for the day. They were some sort of gnat. I never used bug spray and they didn’t bite me much but I wore long pants all the time. They seemed to be fair weather bugs because I didn’t notice them after night fall or early mornings.
