I have heard that it’s no problem buying fuel on trail. But what do you do with the rest of it. Fuel doesn’t come in small enough canisters/bottles does it? Thanks!

Sorry no answer, but rather a related question;
How hard is it to find ESBIT type fuel, along the PCT?
As far as I can tell, it is damn near impossible to find it in Toronto, Canada’s largest city.
May try to search for some on an upcoming PCT training weekend in Lake Placid.
Any availability tips would be great.

If you have extra fuel you don’t want to carry, you just give it away to others who can use it. Sometimes this means leaving it in a hiker box, other times it means leaving the remainder of the fuel at the store where you bought it, with a label that it is to be given to the next hiker in need.
The system works really well, and sometime or other, you’ll be on the receiving end of such kindness.

On the PCT, most of the time it is not a problem to get fuel, if it is white gas. If you have a cannister stove or an alky stove then you may have a hard time finding what you need.
One of the easiest ways i got white gas in a public campgroind was to go up to a car camper or an RV and ask to purchase some. They would usually give it to me for free. Only once did i have to buy an entire gal, give some of it away, and leave the rest behind.
