My wife and I went down to Indio yesterday. Flowers are just starting into full bloom. At Whitewater along the I-10, Phacelia, Encelia, Verbena, and a dozen other species I couldn’t identify from the car were blooming brightly. I know that the alluvial fans in the lower part of Death Valley are already blooming. If conditions hold, people are saying that this could be a once-in-a- lifetime year. Anza Borrego is probably starting to bloom, I doubt though that the higher elevations of Joshua Tree have started yet.

call the Information Center at A-B; i have heard that the bloom is starting already. (760) 767-5311. BUT the weather might be getting sketchy - looks like rain Thurs & Fri.

For those of us starting our thru-hikes in May, will we be able to see much of the spring bloom or will it have subsided by then? Living in the upper great lakes area, I’m not very familiar with the timing of desert seasons.
