Hello all,

Please post this opportunity notice or pass along to current year hikers on the AT, PCT, CDT, CT, AWCT, etc.

Short-term Thru-hiker Intern Desired for Organic Farm in GA

The Roots farm is a 13 acre organic farm 7 miles outside the lively college town of Athens, GA. We are seeking a 2-month farm intern, specifically one who has been on a long hike for months out of this year (like someone who just finished a thru-hike). Our current intern (Proteus AT '05), who came here last year, will be gone for two months and we are looking to find a replacement only until he returns. The time period will be, roughly, Mid-to-late-August to Early November. The applicant must have a strong desire to garden. Previous experience and some farm skills preferred, but not necessary (motivation is more important).

Internship Benefits: This is an internship -a non-paying job. It will be a wonderful education in sustainable farming. The Harvest Intern will have a private room (with kitchen) on the edge of our mixed pine-hardwood forest in a camper trailer. In addition, there will be some harvest food available. It will assumed that the Harvest Intern is used to outdoor living, and this is sort of an in-between between the trail and town life. There is a great community aspect, including weekly pot-lucks, social stuff with other farms, and various on-farm antics (slip-n-slide, hiking trail, wilderness skills classes). Also, you will learn a lot in general about organic gardening and permaculature. We like to think the Roots farm is a very beautiful place and a great place to live with the land. Paid work might be available at a neigbor farm outsode of internship hours.

Job Description: The Harvest Intern will be expected to work 25-30 hours per week in the Roots Farm gardens. This work includes harvesting summer crops, fall garden maintenance, drying, planting, digging, irrigating, weeding, mulching, erecting hoop houses, some basic carpentry, and the like. Work will be directed by our master gardener, although self-directed projects are also encouraged.

Application: We understand most hikers on the trial right now do not have a way to print an application or retrieve a resume. So all we ask is that you take some time to write a response (less than 2 pages) to the following inquiries and mail or email us.

  1. Why do you think gardening would be a good opportunity for you after your thru-hike?

  2. Tell us a bit about yourself.

  3. Why are you a good candidate for the Harvest Intern positition?

jeez man…what is this BS, at least give minimum wage. In case you haven’t noticed, gas is 3 bucks a gallon, its hard to pay for that by plowing your fields for free. and another thing, what makes you think people want to work for free, i sure as hell don’t, and i think i speak for the majority…living right outside Athens, AKA Party Towns USA with no money is not a fun place to be. get real wookie.

come on now

Most internships pay nothing - or very little. This could be a very good deal for the right person.

Wook, when you open a farm in Oregon, or Colorado, or Montana, or in the Appalachians, I’ll volunteer.
