Anybody have any experience using a camcorder on the PCT? Can anyone recommend a camcorder that is operated by AA batteries? Is there a better battery option? Thanks.

I read somewhere that Scott Williamson had used a Canon ZR 500 on the PCT. So I purchased the same camcorder on Ebay (used) and we used it on the JMT. We took a few double pack batteries with us and we were surprised how long they lasted.

Try to get a flash memory based camcorder as there are no moving parts to break and they use less power then tape and harddrive. They also double as a camera if you don’t need a 10-12MegPixel one. Canon and Sony both make several good models at different price points.

Last year while section hiking, I backpacked with a Canon HF100 and a 16GB SDHC card which held around 2hours of footage. I mailed home the cards and picked them back up further along the trail after a friend copied them to a computer external harddrive I gave him. This year I’m getting Canon’s new HF S100 which has improved video quality and the camera pixel count goes from 2 to 8 megapixel.
