Camping at Carter Hut

									I am on the AT and do not want to stay at the AMC hut  Can I camp near Carter Hut up from Pinkham Notch???

									No, all of the huts have FPAs ("Forest Protection Areas") around them, generally a quarter mile radius from each hut, where camping is prohibited. But the 19 Mile Brook Trail that heads north from Carter Notch toward Hwy 16 is a pretty mellow hike and you might be able to find a place to throw down a bag just outside the FPA. In any case, much less challenging to find free camping than most of the other huts along the AT.

									The area around the hut is very rocky but I recall a tent site near the junction of the AT and 19 mile brook trail. I think it is either outside of the zone or an allowable site (overflow site)in the zone.

									There is a tenting site at the junction of AT and 19 mile brook. I was up there a couple weeks ago (stayed at hut for self service) and a group of three was tenting there. Enjoy!
