Please don’t mind the garbled English. The links are good, even if my cut and paste work isn’t!

If you’ve never done a long hike before, you might do better to start with either a shorter trail (i.e. John Muir Trail, Long Trail, Colorado Trail) or with a trail that is easier (i.e. Appalachian Trail) in terms of logistics and navigation.

I think Ginny and i have a history of disagreeing, so believe it when we say the exact same thing: try the John Muir Trail, AT, or PCT first. Fantastic experiences that are just as much like starting with a bang, but with a much greater chance of figuring things out along the way the first time around.

I wouldn’t start off with the John Muir Trail, except maybe in august when creeks are lower & snowfields less & trail ez to find; but if you must do the CDt without experience, at least start off with a buddy who has experience & let them show you how to hike ultralight & how to use an ice axe or partial-crampons that can save your life in icy frozen snow on steep slopes that you have to cross or go vertical on… I started the AT in May & also the PCT in late may both northbound & passed up most hikers not becuz of experience but natural strength & financial need to finish fast. Make sure you have thousands of bucks in reserve & emergency credit card you can access (with automatic payment setup from your bankaccount). you can shop in advance with coupons & sales for cheap food your family can send you , or do as I did on CDT & mostly shop in big cities like Bozeman, Denver, & Grants/Albuquerque sending drifty boxes ahead that you can add to as you go etc…
