Canopy in May? - Appalachian Trail

I will be continuing my hike north from Erwin TN around May 1. I usually hike in early June, and have obviously been farther south in 2002 and 2003, and the leaves and undergrowth have crowded the trail and blocked views. So, starting 350 miles north on the trail, and about a month earlier than normal, will the trail be noticably more free from briars and tangled growth, and also, will I have better views from the peaks and ridges.

By the way, after posting a question on the trail name CBiscuit about a month ago, and getting lots of responses, I have decided to take it as my trail name. See you on the trail in May. Dave Paumen

The trees on top of the mountain do leaf out much later than they do in the low lands. I live right on the AT and can view the mountains year round.

In the fall, you can see the color changes of fall start on the mountain tops and make their way down the mountains. And also in the Spring, you can see the green of Spring make its way up the mountains.

So, I would say at the time you are talking you will have better views than you will a month or so later, but the canopy will already be coming out somewhat. Speaking of which, no canopy means more sun—take sunglasses and sunblock.

Having said all that, I shall make like a tree and leave. LOL.

See you out there. :cheers
