In 2002 I did Maryland with a nephew. We used Greenbrier State Park as a campsite. Secure parking at Pen Mar County park, Wolfville Rd (Md 17), Washington SP,Gathland SP,and Harper Ferry across the bridge. His wife, Teenage son, and 7 yr old daughter joined us for awhile. Lolly (the 7 yr old) said she liked hiking, it was a whole lot like walking.

I agree with Tabasco. * Pen Mar County Park, * Wolfsville Road (parking 1/10 mile E. of AT), * Washington Monument State Park (parking lot of the left soon after entering the park), *Crampton Gap, Gathland State Park (nice parking lot), * Harpers Ferry, WV (try to park at the Appalachian Trail Conference on weekends…ask permission first though; or pay to park at the AMTRAC station near to where the AT crosses the Potomac). WARNING: DO NOT PARK AT WEVERTON ROAD BECASUSE OF VANDALSM.
I hiked the entire Maryland section last winter and had a great time.
