Caroline McKissick Hike on AT

Does anyone know how Caroline McKissick’s thru hike on the AT is going? She is the woman who lost her fiance in a military accident in Iraq and is hiking in his memory with her daughter and another friend. My friend and I were fortunate to meet her while we were on a day hike to Shuckstack. She started the trail heading north in March and I’m wondering if she and her group have completed the trek. I’d appreciate any info. Thanks.

Hi JB,

I live in Southern Pines, NC, same town as Carolyn, and have been trying to connect with her since we have the same similar rare interest here in the horse/golf capital of the south. I know she got off for awhile, got back on, and I don’t know the rest, but your inquiry prompts me to dig further.

Did you know Southern Pines has had six AT thru-hike starters (how rare is that in a small town?), and four of them are women. The other two are teenaged boys hiking with their mother.

Must be something in the water here.

Hi Jay and Jan!
Thanks for inquiring about me! I am off the trail now due to an ankle injury. I apparently did some damage to a ligament which took quite a while to heal -several months. Jay, when I met you I was limping pretty badly and got off shortly thereafter. My ankle is fine now. I have hiked on the AT and in Oregon since leaving the trail. At this point, I have become a section hiker. By the time my ankle healed, the window for me to finish the hike in time was over. I am ok with that now ~ taking it as another trail lesson. It was quite a blow to me to have to leave at the time.
I hope to spend some time hiking this fall. It is amazing how time becomes hard to come by when you are back in the real(??) world.
Hope you are well Jay! And yes Jan, we need to meet!
Caroline
