i am leaving in a couple days for my thru hike and i am carrying my pack on the plane i shipped all my questionable gear ahead of me but i forgot to ship my tent stakes, do you think these would be a problem to carry on?

The airlines are now much looser in what they allow on. Instead of risking it, I would just call the airline & ask. If it’s a no; then send it overnight or 2 day.

I agree with leah, ship it ahead. Then pick it up atthe po in Suches, the first town stop.

Do NOT try to bring tent stakes or any other sharp objects in your carry-on bag. They’ll arrest you. Put them in your checked baggage only.

They won’t arrest you for packing tent stakes, especially if said tent is in your BACK PACK… It’s obvious they aren’t meant as a weapon. They may releive you of them, but that would be it. You may want to send them on ahead just to avoid the hassle, but it’s not a ‘crime’ to pack a tent.

Now sharpen that tent stake and hide it in your boot and try and go thru security, see where that gets ya. Maybe that’s what happened to Kid…

It’s a fickled world. Last year returning from my hike from Maine the TSA never questioned my tent stakes. However, when boarding the plane in Portland, ME., I carried on my leki hiking poles (top half only without the bootom half tips) as I had no roon room to ship. No problem in Maine, but changing planes in D.C. the TSA would no permit me to carry the poles on. Go figure!

I agree. I’d immediately think that they’d have some problem with them, and I doubt it would matter much if you’ve got the tent with you–intentions don’t usually get you too far with the TSA.

That said, it should be zero problem if you just took them up to check-in and had them stored in the bottom of the plane like luggage–though I might pack them with something bigger so they don’t get lost.

Worst-case is you just ask the driver to stop by an REI quick before he takes you to the Trail, which is a pretty common request of hostelliers. Or heck, use rocks until you get to Walasi-Yi.

I remember flying home one trip and forgetting to throw my fuel cannister away until check-in. I took it down to the police department (couldn’t just chuck it in a garbage), but got red-flagged for thorough searches through every security checkpoint all the way home. ugh.

0101,

You probably got red flagged because you had a one-way ticket. That’s one of the criteria for searches.
