CDT maps and GPS needed

If anyone is selling forest service and/or BLM maps for the CDT, I am interested. I have some, but need most for NM and WY, MT.

Also, if anyone is selling a handheld GPS unit, preferably with some mapping ability (like Garmin extrex models) I am very interested. If you also have the MapSource CD/DVD with US topo maps, that would be great too.

I may be able to help you out with a GPS. I recently replaced my eTrex Legend with a new Legend HCx.

The old Legend I bought used off of ebay a few years ago. It works fine. I just recently downloaded the most recent software for it so that it can take advantage of the newest WAAS satellite that was just launched. Here is the description and Amazon Listing for this model unit.

I also have a brand new, still sealed in plastic copy of Garmin’s Topo U.S. 2008. I inadvertently ended up with two copies of this.

I have currently offered this to a friend of mine, but she has yet to get back with me. I will check with her again, to see if she is interested. If she isn’t, I would be willing to sell this combo for $120.

Lyle,
I am very interested. I’m checking out the specs. Couple of questions: I assume the CD is for a PC? Is this the one with 24mb of memory? I think it is…

The Topo maps are on a DVD. Windows and Mac compatible.

The Legend only has 8 mb of flash memory. You can download what you need of the DVD maps (I think they are broken up in county-sized sections. You choose which sections to load onto the Legend). As far as I know none of the Garmin GPS units generally available will download the entire US map all at the same time. That would require upwards of 4 gb of space. Even my new Legend which accepts micro SD cards can only accept 2 gb at a time.

You will not have space on any GPS that I know of the download the entire CDT’s worth of topos. You will need computer access occasionally to update the GPS with new maps.

You do understand that the actual map isn’t necessary to take advantage of the GPS, especially if you plan to carry paper maps as well - as you should. The primary use of the GPS will be to intermittently get a fix on your exact location, then find it on the Map and go from there.

Hope this helps.

Lyle,
Didn’t hear back from you and wondered if you got my email. I wondered if you had heard from your friend if they wanted the GPS, or if it is still available.
