Cell phone and Whitney shuttle 7/11

Hi all - I have 2 questions.

One: is there a point to bring a cell phone on the JMT for safety reasons? If I got in an emergency situation would there even be any service to use it or is just a waste of a few precious ounces?

Two: I’m planning on exiting at Mt Whitney on August 11 I think. Is anyone else planning on being there around there and wants to carpool or arrange a ride together? I’d probably be going towards LA or the Bay, but I’m flexible.

Thanks!

ps - planning on starting next wed - can’t wait

I was able to call VVR from the head of the lake to requst a nightime boat ride back to VVR. I was told I only got reception because of the nearby dam and power company. It was the only place i got any coverage. Phone was a good alarm clock though.

Yes, like Cheers we got coverage at the dam at VVR and near Red’s Meadow/Mammoth Lakes area. But Grizz and Jerm tried their phones at every pass and got nothing each time. Jerm picked up a few bars on top of Whitney but still couldn’t call out.

I say leave it at home. There’ll be plenty of hikers out there with you.

There is public transportation from Whitney. Mono Transport(sp?) runs a bus between Reno and Ridgecrest, with two connections to Amtrack, either directly out of Reno or at Ridgecrest there is bus to the Amtrack station in Mohave.
