I am doing the JMT for the third time starting in mid August. How is the cell phone reception now on the trail? Last time I did it no one was using cell phones
Thx

Last August I found cell reception was very limited. I had a trak phone and rarely had enough reception to get a call out or in. I had a friend with a smart phone who could get text messages in many areas. But to be honest I rarely turned my phone on for fear that work would get in the way of my hike.

I did the JMT last year southbound from Yosemite. Had some cell coverage (Verizon) the first week; however, the last two weeks there was none and I checked on every mountain pass. Some hikers with other service providers had sporadic coverage.
I just wrote my trail journal entries every night, saved them as drafts and sent two weeks worth with photos attached to my journalist when I got to Lone Pine.
It’s such a short trip you won’t miss cell coverage especially with all the beauty. Take more photos and forget about cell coverage.
Buy a Hero2 Go Pro video camera and take 5 hours of HD video on one 32 GB card.
If I had only one hike left in me I’d do the JMT again. It’s that spectacular!!!

Cell service is spotty. Tuolumne Meadows, Donohue Pass, Reds, VVR usually. Mt. Whitney is reliable for Verizon for sure and I hear ATT has improved there service for Whitney. Best bet is to leave the phone at home but that’s just my opinion.

ATT - had service in lots of Yosemite, Donohue Pass, Red’s Measdow, and very particular spots at VVR. also had service the entire bear creek trail (there was no ferry last summer, so we took the Bear Creek trail out from VVR). didn’t have a damn bit of coverage after bear creek until i got whiteny summit (and then it was spotty). checked service on top of every pass, and every night at camp.
