Stumpknocker used an LG nV phone by Verizon this year. It has a querky keyboard for texting and a 2 MP camera. He posted his journal almost daily until reaching Maine. In Maine he had no coverage at all. A pocket composer (Pocketmail) and a cell phone weigh about 11.2 oz while the LG nV2 alone weighs 4.6 oz’s.

I used a Treo 700wx with a external anntenna and directly posted to trail jounal while in the SNP. Very time consuming but it does work.

It also uses a SD memory card that I could swamp with my camera.

That should be “QWERTY” keyboard, named after the letters in the upper left hand quadrant.

I hiked about 100 miles of the southern part of Maine this year, plus about 50 miles of Connecticut. I use AT@T and had pretty good service most of the way, unlike Stumpknockers Verizon signal. I use a Tilt phone, haven’t actually used it to update trailjournals, but think it would work fine.
