Me and a friend were looking at hiking a section of the PCT, somewhere roughly around Lake Tahoe to Yosemite. We have been told that is a good section. Does any one have any good links or books to use for research. Also if anyone has any tips or good sections to hike. We are looking to be hiking for about 12-14 days. Any advice is appreciated.

When are you planning to hike? This area had LOTS of snow last year until the end of June. It’s a beautiful area though. We used Yogi’s thru-hiking guide.

See if you can find a copy of the The Tahoe-Yosemite Trail by Thomas Winnett. It follows the PCT for about 2/3 of its length, then breaks off on different routes a couple of times. I have done the PCT and the Tahoe-Yosemite trail and have found the Tahoe-Yosemite to be slightly more scenic with better re-supply options. Check it out!

We were looking at going the first couple weeks of June

Unless you’re proficient snow hikers, you might want to have a back-up plan. I’d suggest from Burney Falls State Park southward as an alternative. The area around Lassen National Park is beautiful and is lower than the Tahoe and Yosemite areas, so maybe not as much snow.

I have done two sections of the Tahoe to Yosemite trail. You start in
Desolation Wilderness and will have to cross snow at Phipps and Dicks pass.
I have been over snow the last week of June and it was doable but slow
sinking into postholes. I have also been from the north border of Yosemite
to Toulumne Meadows. You will cross several snowy passes but nothing
approaching the elevations of the passes south of Bishop.

July would be easier, August would be mostly bugless and more pleasant.

Here is a trip report of my Desolation Trip in the last week of June 1993.
You can see the snow over the passes. Not really a danger but did slow
things down. We were on the TYT from Tahoe until past Aloha Lake.

The snow levels are now up to 100% of the April 1st average with two heavy snow months remaining. I don’t think it is looking too good for a June hike unless you like Winter Mountaineering conditions and the slight chance of avalanches still.

hey bud, last summer, my buddies and i set out to hike from tuolumne meadows(yosemite) to sonora pass…about half way to lake tahoe. we planned for it to take roughly 7 days if needed. let me tell you though, some of those passes in the sierras are long and arduous. you get one down and you got 2000 feet more elevation to climb up and over again. day after day. so be prepared. due to some injuries and a death in the family, we took an alternate route into and out of the grand canyon of the tuolumne above hetch hetchy…

also, a great book to get, is published by wilderness press.
it is called PACIFIC CREST TRAIL, and it is split into sections. i have the one that is specically from tuolumne meadows to the oregon border. it is perfect for those not planning to do the entire through hike at once.
