Changes in Twin Lakes, CO

I just spoke to the Twin Lakes General Store to see if they carry isobutane canisters for camping stoves (they do - in 2 sizes, but they run out occasionally).

I was told that the Wind Spirit Cafe and Cabins has closed, and that both are being converted into apartments. That was the only eating spot in town. The store owner is considering adding some sort of food (deli?) to take up some of the slack.

I was also told that the Nordic Inn has closed as well. That leaves only the Twin Peaks Cabins for accommodations in Twin Lakes.

Additionally, the Willis Gulch bridge has not been repaired (lack of funds) and most likely will be torn down. Cross at the gauging station a bit further west instead. Alternatively, there is a trail directly from town (ask in the store) that leads to a ford of Lake Creek at the west end of the lakes, and up to the CDT/old CT trail. Turn right to follow the CDT over Hope Pass; turn left to meet the new CT along the south shore of the lake near the dam.

Plan accordingly.

On our second thruhike we decided to hitch into Leadville instead of resupplying at Twin Lakes. It was a really nice alternative. There is a great hostel and good restaurants and stores. We spent a couple of days there resting and filling up.
