I will be starting out on my '08 section hike on Thursday, June 12th from Charlottesville, VA. I have decided to catch the dog (Greyhound) from ATL to Charlotlesville, $55 for 600 miles. I’m not trilled about riding the dog but the cost was hard for me to pass up. C-ville is close to my section hike. I may decide to fly home after riding the bus for 13 hours.

I’m trying to get to Swift Run Gap from the bus station in Charottesville. I need some ideas or suggestions? Would it be better to get off at the Amtrak stop? Is it an easy hitch up Highway 29 to 33? How much is a shuttle? I would hate to pay $60 to go 30 miles, when it only cost $55 to travel 600 miles from ATL.

I plan to hike for about 3 weeks, well into PA. Hopefully past Port Clinton and a little beyond. Any suggestions on don’t miss hostels, hotels, restaurants along the way would be helpful.

There is a bunch of trail angels based in Waynesboro that will do short shuttles, too. Check the shuttle list in the Shenandoah NP section.

Bears Den is a great stop closer to Harpers Ferry.
Have a great hike!

I went to college in Charlottesville. I do not think hitching to Swift Run Gap would be particularly easy. Charlottesville is not a small town, and you would have to get a number of hitches.

(it’s not ALL rocks!)…don’t miss church of the mountain hostel in delaware water gap (and the bakery down the street!), if you go that far… (if you do, of course, you will have experienced the incredible climb of lehigh gap and hopefully the wonderful little town of palmerton (and the “jail” hostel)…but FOR SURE, stop in at the hotel in port clinton for one of their famous hamburgers and PLATE of fries!

I just recently got a ride from Charlesville to Waynesboro
by a trail angle named Bill Gallagher who lives in Rockfish Gap. His number is 540-456-8078. I had just come up from Roanoke and he was free so he came right over and got me.

Thanks for the information and help. I did find someone to give me a shuttle from Charlottesville to Swift Run Gap. They will pick me up outside the bus station.
