Choosing a tarp/tent--reviews and advice?

I'm considering buying a lightweight (<24oz) tarp/tent style shelter (from Henry Shire's or lightheartgear or 6 moons) for my upcoming thru-hike.

–What you like most about your tent/tarp/shelter? --Which do well with condensation?

I’m also toying with the idea of using a regular silnylon tarp with an enclosed bugnet (with a floor), but I don’t have the bugnet–does anyone have one they want to get rid of? I’d like one with enough headroom that I can sit upright inside. Thanks!

Best ventilation is with a tarp, which also gives the most flexibility for pitching. I've pitched over small trees and logs & rocks in some cases. You'll need bug protection with a tarp in summertime on the AT - an A6 Bug Bivy worked well for me.

A tarp-tent with bug screen works well too, but weighs a bit more than the above combo. Get one that is pitched using a hiking pole to save some weight.

The Henry Shires Contrail is one of his lightest and easiest options. It's also pretty much the roomiest of solo tents, which is great. The air flow isn't great though. Not terrible, but not great...you can definitely have some condensation issues if you're in a wet climate. Also some people complain about the pole being in front of the entryway, but i not only got used to it but ended up preferring it. It made it easy to slide out and pull myself up by the pole.

All that said, it might be a better choice for the PCT or CDT than the AT, due to its weight and the humidity on the AT.
