Clark vs Hennessy

I think it is time for my body to be suspended at night vs using my faithful tarp. I like to sleep on my side and think the hammock is what I need to relieve my tossing and turning. I’m leaning toward the Clark Ultra Light w/oversize fly over the Hennessy Explorer Ultra Light. The entry appeals better to me on the Clark. Any suggestions on one over the other?

I have both. The Clark goes hiking, the HH stays in the closet. I like being able to take the bug net off and having the pockets underneath me for my boots and gear. Just my personal preference.

I have the Hennessey. Won’t buy a Clark, if I did it would stay in the closet. “Some people” no names mentioned don’t know the proper way to pitch a HH.!! – Really out of all the hammocks out there it comes down to personal choice. Hennessey Hammocks are still the number one, however, the choices are growing each year and many hikers make their own. Look at all the options that each hammock has to offer and then pick which one resonates with you. If at all possible, try out a few before buying. Sue/Hammock Hanger (Love & miss ya Hokey Pokey!!)

I’ve used the Hennessey and the Mosquito (some people call them Clayton) hammocks. I much prefer the side entry/zipper (similar to the Clark) of the Mosquito Hammocks to the underside entry/velcro of the Hennessey. Plus, the Mosquito Hammocks are about half the cost of either the Hennessey or Clark. The Mosquito weighs a couple oz more than the Hennessey, not sure about the Clark.

Any of these are good choices. Like Hammock Hanger says, if possible, try before you buy.

I have hiked the past 3 years using a Clark Tropical in Vermont. My wife has a Asym Hennessey. I like the side entry and the four pockets underneath. She likes having more room side-to-side and the lighter weight. We used to tent and would never go back. If you’re really conflicted you need to try out both designs and determine which one suits you.

I tried a couple of top-loaders (Speer and Clark) before settling on the Hennessy design as my ideal. The bottom entry just works better for me most of the time. I got the Hyperlight because I’m not a big guy (only 5’9", 165) and it’s more than big enough for me. I also find the asym design works better for my sleep style. That I get for a mere 26oz, including lines, stakes and snakeskins. I’m contemplating a Cuben cat-cut tarp to drop the weight by another 5oz or so.

That’s what works for me, but there are plenty of people who swear by Speer’s design (too much work to stay flat for me, since I don’t like a pad) or the Clark or most any other design. The new
bridge hammocks are showing some interesting potential, if the weight can be brought down a bit more. There’s plenty of advice and help to be found on hammocking over at the
Hammock Forums site. In the end, it all depends on your own needs and that you’ll only find out by putting your body in the sling.

I had been hiking with a Hennessy but switched last yaer to the Clark and perfer it. The Hennessy is a great hammock but I now use the Clark exclusivly for the following reasons.

  1. It does a ground set-up much easier if you are stuck somewhere that the ground is your only option.

  2. Having the pockets underneath is very handy.

  3. I prefer the side entry as I find it easier to get inj and out and you can sit in it like a chair.

  4. With the oversize tarp you have a dry place to sit and cook, eat or rest during a rain storm.

  5. I find it slightly more comfortable.

  6. I find it easier to set up.

The only draw back is that is is MUCH narrower and gets a little claustrophobic.

Skeeter Beeter is the best. Its got the bug net with a good set up. I used some NRS straps because the ones that come with are too short. They’re great and they add alot of support when up around and near the timber line.
