Climb Split mt, Kearsage Pass-South Lake

Hello, Labor day we will be backpacking our first trip of JMT. We will head in from Onion valley, and exit 6 days later thru South Lake. I understand Split Mt is near Mather Pass, and lake 11,599. Can anyone give me a description of how to get to Split Mt summit. One book said its a walk up grassy slopes. All the web site reports describe it from other side and say its horrible. How far is it off the trail. Is lake 11,599 easy to spot since I believe from studying the maps there are lots of lakes around there.

Also any beta, special info we should know about that segment. We are avid CO hikers, and climb 14ers regularly.

Please send any notes directly to me at lindajagger@yahoo.com. I do not often get on this web site.

Sorry, i’m posting the response here, since some others might be interested.

Split from the JMT is pretty easy. It sounds like you’ll be coming from the south. Continue on the trail until you are just below the climb up Mather Pass, at which point you’ll be able to see the lake nestled between the pass and Split. Follow around the south end of the lake, then aim for the obvious saddle between Split and Prater, which is to the north of Split. Once you get to the saddle, you’ll appreciate how much more of a pain it would be to climb this from the east instead of from the JMT! From the saddle, follow the slope southwards up to the summit. On a clear day you’ll see Whitney in the distance.

Have fun!
