Climbing Whitney w/o a Pack

Is it possible to store your pack anywhere near the base of Mt. Whitney when making an ascent? I am trying to decide if I should bring along a small camelback which I would only use for that ascent and then mail home, or if I’d have to take the whole big pack up there anyway.

Plenty of hikers drop their packs at the junction of the summit trail and Trail Crest. It is only about 2 miles (1,000 feet) short of the summit, but it would help.

I’m not sure about dropping it at the junction of the PCT and JMT or near the Crabtree Ranger Station. You could probably stash it there. I think its around 6 miles (2,300 feet) from here to the summit.

I stashed some of my stuff there in '06.

Last year we camped at Guitar Lake the night before we ascended Whitney. We took our regular packs, carrying only water, food, and extra clothes for the top. We stashed our non-food stuff in a zipped-up tent and kept our bear cans well away from the tent so the marmots wouldn’t be tempted to chew into our stuff. It worked. Good luck.
