I thru-hiked with one the first month or so but then again I departed Springer the middle of February. Anyhow I sent it back. I also sent back the ball cap I had. I learned to tie a bandana over my head and I used another one over my nose and mouth in the western train robber style. Both bandanas served me well. One did get stolen though. I met some friends over Memorial Day near Crabtree Falls in VA. I got there before them and to indicate the campsite I was at along the road up the mountain I tied one of my bandanas around a small tree at the turn in. Someone stopped and took it before my friends got there, the red one which I used over my face. Anyway I used bandanas.
