It was interesting to find out that the Appalachian trail crosses the same cold mountain as the book/movie. Any stories out there, or interesting things to share with us? By all means, do tell.
no trail, hence no trail name

I read where very little of the movie was filmed on Cold Mtn. Most of it was filmed over seas. The locals are quite po’d about that.
Hikerhead
The A.T. does not cross Cold Mountain in Haywood County NC. The summit is reached via the Art Lobe trail. The closest the A.T. comes to Cold Mtn. is Davenport Gap–about 30 miles west of Cold Mtn.

If you take a look at the book, the inside flap has a hand drawn map of the area the novel concerns. However, from the landmarks noted you can relate to where the AT is located to the rest of the story.

hikerhead, in an interview in Empire mag, the director said it was all filmed in europe coz everytime he turned the camera around he got industry and progress (telephone poles, paved roads, etc) in his shots so he filmed it in transylvania in romania.
Bloody Cactus
At least one part of the film was made in the US. They transformed the river front at Carters Grove Plantation in Va. in to a more southern river front( added palm trees, cotton field ect.) They filmed there for at least a week. JB
totally Boagus
My son went snow hiking/camping with his scout troop at the foot of Cold Mountain the weekend before Christmas, there is a boy scout reservation there. Yes, it was COLD…It was 14F in the morning in 4-5 inches of snow.
We never heard of the movie until after he got back. The local paper says the torrent of tourists is about to begin, even though there is nothing movie related to see there, go figure! The movie was filmed in Romania.
RockyTrail
Yes, they probably will, but not easliy…it is not an easy hike to cold mountain, it’s a nice high altitulde western north carolina mountain. The book was written by a local descendant who now lives in raleigh, nc. he based it upon the true life experience of a ancestor who deserted general lee’s army during the civil war to return home, walked across virginia and nc, then was killed by marauding militia less than twenty miles from his cold mountain area home. the book is fiction, based on real family history. It was nice first book by the author, but i don’t know about the movie. I have heard nicole kidman has the worst southern accent ever filmed. It does have anice cast though. Jude Law looks great as the male lead, very southern and realistic, and renee zellweiger’s texas brouge can be modified to sound like 19th centruy mountain twang i bet. only, she should have had the female lead. she’s too pretty and sexy to be the ragamuffin farm helper.

nicole with southern drawl probably sounds as realistic as kevin costner with his english accent as robin hood
aint seen it yet, but i hope she doesnt hide her aussie twang
itd be nice to hear it on the bigscreen every once in a while…
Bloody Cactus
Its not the same Cold Mountain as in the movie but the AT does cross Cold Mountain just north of Buena Vista in Virginia. And it is aptly named. Last year Blaze and I crossed the top in the middle of May in a snowstorm.
