Coleman fuel - Appalachian Trail

This is a car camping question, so very inappropriate for this forum, but maybe someone can help me out.

I’m a backpacker, not a car camper. But next week I’m going car camping, and I borrowed a friend’s two-burner Coleman stove. Where does one buy fuel for a Coleman stove? And what kind of fuel does it use?

Coleman Fuel can be bought at your local outfitter, hardware stores, walmart, etc. Should be easy to find. Unless it’s a propane canister you are looking for and then the answer is your local outfitter, walmart. MY

Buy fuel, white gas, at hardware stores, Walmarts, camping stores, K Marts, etc.

Try the stove out at home first, a lot of times if the stove hasn’t been used in a while the pump seal will dry out and need to be re-oiled for a good seal, otherwise you won’t be able to get any stove pressure. Not fun to find this out at the campground.

Oki, many will thnk this crazy, but I and others have done it for years. You can safely and surely substitute Amoco high octane gas for coleman camp fuel if your budget is tight. It is clear and white, and so close to camp fuel you cannot tell the difference in burn rate, btu’s, smell, etc. Yo can use it in all appliances that require camp fuel, not just the duel fuel ones. Camp fuel has been a scam for years. Us hillbillys down here in the smokies almost always use Amoco premium grade white gas.

I was surprised to find it at a local grocery store once.

Check our web site - we’ll let you have a gallon for $24.99. We can drop ship it to your location for an aditional charge.

This is helpful. Hey, if I can survive 2 weeks in the woods with nothing but what I can carry on my back, surely I can survive a week of car camping, right?

Hey, it’s not just the hill billies that use Amaco. Long before Coleman came out on the market we used Amaco because it was the only onleaded gas on the market.

I am both a backpacker and a car camper. I have the dual fuel coleman two burner stove and lantern. While super unleaded works for both, I would caution using it because it is not as “clean” as the coleman fuel. I too being the cheapskate would use only super unleaded. However, this lead to my lantern clogging and needing parts replaced. While a stove may clog less freqently, I would go with the coleman fuel, especially when I have seen it as low as $3.00 a gallon. Gas devices are a royal pain in the a$$ to fix.

I second checking out the pump cup. If it needs oiling give it a day or to really soak into the cup. Better yet, pick up a spare. The cups can be bought separated from the metal pump for a couple of dollars at campmor.

Howdy, Walmart makes a cleaner white gas than Coleman and is less expensive. It would help to prevent a SNAFU with your “new” camping experience.Peace, 2 Spirits

I’ve read that car gas is simply white gas with a whole bunch of additives to make it more efficient for car engines to burn. So it’s possible that these additives are what clog up stoves/lanterns, and they’re present in all grades of gas from the station.
