i just moved back to boulder and just finished the first half of the colorado trail. they just shut down the first six sections of the trail (the entire forrset for that matter). eventhough there is a drought water was pretty reliable (except for the day i had to refill my water bottle with cap-fulls of water from a small trickle). i’m thinking of leaving this friday to do the second half of the trail, but worried about fires myself. it’s pretty nutty. there are two sections (5 and 6) which are absolutely stunning. so far the most beautiful of the entire hike.

Windex is out there doing some summer teaching in the nountains and I think she is away from any e-mail or radio source. Hope she can smell. We just got back from northern California and it was paper dry. Over night a few lightning stikes started some small fires near us. Saw the Smoke Jumpers there in action. Very cool. Watch your stoves and campfires everyone. No crispy fried hikers.
We wondered though, since some tree species need fire to open cones and fire is the “natural” turn of events why we put so much energy into putting them ALL out. We guessed the ones we saw, just a smouldering hollow tree and some small scrub are safe to train on as these four guys were going. Then again when the park srevice or whom ever does burn, it get out of control almost every time. Lose lose. Don’t forget your Smores :>)
