Colorado Trail?

Hey Everybody, I hav’nt talked to many of you in quite some time. A couple of questions for those that might have hiked the Colorado trail. Another fairly well known hiker and myself both go to Sam houston state university here in texas, and we are both kind of money crunched as summer approaches. We were kickin around the idea of maybe heading up to the colorado for a trip this summer and need an idea of A) how long will it take. B) how much will it cost. Now lets not start the old arguements about IF THIS or IF THAT, just looking for a ballpark.

PS. See if you can figure out who the other Sam Houston BearKat is, Hint/ he needed snowshoes on the trail last year.

Well if you don’t want any “if’s” then I can’t help you. It’s 487 miles, a 15-18 mpd average will help you enjoy it. There some towns, but I can’t say if so there ya go. How much comfort do you need in town? How much do you usually spend on food in that amount of time? There’s no permits needed or anything. Tip: If (Sorry) WHEN you get to Leadville, you can get the best breakfast you’ve ever had for the money at columbine cafe. BIG pancakes! …kind of a hard question to answer since you limited the responses.

BearKat-check out the recent threads under the Forum set aside for the CT. I’m leaving mid-July and planning on 6 weeks. I don’t picture this being an expensive hike, few towns, short time frame and I have some local support and contacts.

Wookie,

Soory dude, when I meant If's, I just meant not to start a long arguement. Please feel free to expand all you want, probably not the best wording on my part. Thank you for the help. By the way our family preacher used to live in leadville and I asked about that Cafe, he totally backs up your hint.

Blueberry,

I figured it would take more than one answer to get the right hiker, I see "rocket" about twice a week and bounced the idea off him the other day. He's interested to be sure, but we both need to keep expenses to a minimum. I'll look for those posts, thank you.

If you are willing to go bare bones and camp outside of town, then it really won’t cost that much. Some town trips are pretty far off trail. Creede, for instance, is an 8-mile (i think) walk, unless you get lucky with a ride. We caught a ride down, but had to walk back up. If you get caught there after dark, there’s not a lot of camping room anywhere. You could probably find somewhere, however. There is a hotel, but also a couple small B&B’s that are about the some price but have laundry and breakfast.

Same goes for Leadville. it can be hard to get a hitch, but be positive and it'll come.

All the places like Copper and Breck you can find a place to camp. You can take a bus from Copper (free) to Sliverthorn and get to the Alpine Hutte hostel, which is cheap and the owner is a nice deadhead.

You can also camp low-key across the street from the hot-springs place after Yale peak. They have tepees and college-aged employees who live there and were very friendly to us.

In all, the trail is very cheap unless you get sucked in to the town tractor beam. The trail itself is unreal!

Have fun!

I also think it will be an inexpensive hike. The hitch at Colorado Highway 149 was very slow. You can go to either Lake City or Creede and all the cars seemed to be headed to Creede. Our box was at Lake City PO and it was a friendly town but also hard to get out of. I recommend Creede. We also missed Tincup and heard that the first meal is free for thru hikers! We just ate pizza and walked through Copper Mtn. Our resupplies are on our itinerary at
