Call for Trail Magic:

For those of you who knew Commander-in-Chief, or even just followed her AT journal in 2003, she’s been called up as a Reservist from Vermont. I celebrated her 50th birthday with her in Delaware Water Gap in '03, so this was a bit of a surprise to her friends, and indeed to herself. She thought she was retired until two weeks before she left.

I post this here because hikers are an awesome community, and they reach out to kindred spirits. If Cindy has touched you in any way, or even in you just wish to be of support to an aging hiker shipped overseas, perhaps you would consider a note of cheer.

I would extend this thread to ANYONE who wishes to post news of our overseas-shipped hikers.

Cindy’s address, she leaves shortly, but I would assume all mail would be forwarded:
SSG Clemence, Cynthia
BLDG 2490
A Co 2/172 AR
86th BDE
Camp Shelby, Ms 39407-5500

Further notes on “the life:” The barracks and the latrines are separate buildings. “Each time they
leave a building, they must be in full battle rattle. Full battle rattle entails, helmet, battle vest, BDUs, boots rifle, canteen, chemical suit, chemical
boots, chemical gloves, chemical mask, shovel, butt pack, Alice pack, MRE’s, knife or bayonet, and anything else you may want to go with you. Basically
similar to hiking the trail, but I can guarantee that stuff weighs a lot more than you would even want to begin thinking about,” writes a mutual friend…

"So far the orders read Kuwait. They are supposed to be guarding infrastructures in Saudi Arabia. The orders for the 600 people in that group
read “for not more than 545 days”. That is 18 months.
They can accept packages. Perhaps you might want to send her a drop box. Here is a list of what we pick from here:

Indiv wrapped hard candy, not spearmint
Sun Block
TOILET PAPER
Peanut M&Ms
Letters
Pictures
Gum-Winter fresh
Tang
Country time lemonade-not pink"

Keep Cindy, and all those in harm’s way, in your hearts.

Thanks for passing this news on. I’m sure a number of folks will indeed by providing her with some “resupply parcels”.

Please pass on our best to her and wish her a Merry Christmas.

Back at the start of the first Gulf War I had been out of the Marines for 10 years. I was shocked to hear that some “former” Marines I knew back then were indeed called back to active duty.
