Compasses - Continental Divide Trail

I haven’t been able to find much information about compass’ other than that you need one (and maps and GPS is helpful).

Is the basic Suunto A-10 decent enough, or should I get a more advanced one with the mirror on it? I received this model as a gift and was wondering whether I should just stick with the simple one I carried on the PCT (and didn’t really use)

Thanks

The most basic compass (Suunto A-10 for sure, I have and use one) is more than adequate for the mainly wide open spaces of the West. The compasses with the sighting mirror are overkill for most orienteering purposes done for backpacking. Just my experience, anyway.

FWIW, on the CDT, I used a basic compass with the addition of small magnifying glass built in (an extra $5) to help read the details on the J Ley maps. No need to get an extra compass; you can get a cheap and light magnifying glass in an eyeglass repair kit that will do the job (If you think you need or want one).

A sighting mirrored model can double as a signaling mirror or vanity enabler. Believe it or not, some of us enjoy looking at ourselves out there every now and then, if only to confirm our very existence in a moment of doubt, before recoiling in horror.

But no, you probably won’t need the mirror for actual compass work on the CDT. It’s just a convenient place to have one.

I agree, the most basic compass is fine out there. We mainly just followed the maps and used a GPS, the suunto A-10 will be enough for the CDT.
