Conditions in the South

I am thinking of heading out this week (or next week, depending on Hurricane Ivan) to do a little bit of hiking in either NC or VA.

How’s the weather out there right now?

Today is mid 80s and the humidity is pretty high…The hurricane is supposed to bring a lot of rain to the area between thursday and the weekend. Be smart, wait til next week. When the storm passes, temps might be the same, but the humidity will surely drop.
Good luck!

I hiked this section Friday afternoon to Saturday noon, staying at Sasafrass Gap Shelter. Weather was a bit stuffy, but not unbearable. I would not wanna be there during IVAN though…

I went hiking in the Mountain Bridge Wilderness this weekend, and the rangers said they had 10 inches of rain from the last hurricane…more than they’ve ever had there. As a result, many trees were down and the trails were completely washed out in some places. Bridges were washed away at other places.

You might want to wait out the storm, then call ahead and check on trail conditions before you leave. They might be able to steer you to more hikeable trails if others are damaged.
